Debi Srail On The Issues
Education
As an educator, Debi understands firsthand the needs that our schools are facing. We need to stop overextending our teachers and provide them with the necessary resources to give our students the high quality education they deserve. We need smaller class sizes and an overall decrease in teacher workload. The more individualized attention our students can get the more likely they are to succeed.
Our schools are depending more and more on school levies in order to fill an ever growing funding gap. As your State Senator, Debi will fight to make sure our state government lives up to its responsibility to our children so our schools will not have to look elsewhere so often for the funding they need.
WASL
Debi believes in providing our children with a diverse, well-rounded education while maintaining accountability in our schools. The WASL is designed to measure students’ progress in regards to the benchmarks set by the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR). These benchmarks are extensive (you can view them here), but since the WASL is only administered once every three years, we are at best only getting a general idea of where are students and our schools stand.
Debi proposes that we further incorporate the EALRs into our schools’ yearly curriculum.By doing this we can assess our students on each of these benchmarks throughout every year, rather than testing some of them once every three years. This will give our students a much more in-depth, complete education while providing parents the ability to see specifically how their children, and their children’s schools, are performing.
These changes will ensure that our children will have an edge entering the workforce and our schools be given the resources where they need them most.
Taxes
Debi believes that the citizens of the 28th Legislative District are being treated unfairly by the tax system. She believes we should eliminate the Business & Occupation (B&O) tax in order to ease the burden on our small businesses.
Rising property taxes are quickly getting out of control. If elected, Debi will fight to find a more equitable solution to this problem so our families no longer have to deal with constantly skyrocketing taxes.
Health Care
Debi believes in accessible, affordable health care that provides coverage to every person in need.
Transportation
We have a lack of funding for transportation projects in our state. Debi believes we need to do more to make our roads safer and less congested. We also need to make sure our cities have the resources they need to fix street repairs locally.
Jobs
In a constantly expanding and evolving economy, Debi believes it is crucial to ensure that every person who is willing and able to work has the opportunity to do so. This requires helping those seeking employment receive the training they need to succeed in today’s economy. If elected, Debi will fight to make sure that the Legislature never turns its back on Washingtonians who want to work.
